End of year show

I was proud to have my work shown at the end of year show. I was really happy to see we got positive responses. Overall I think that the whole team who worked on the film are happy to see it on the big screen.

Evaluation

For the final major project I wanted to create a short film about a superhero I created with Oskar called Tighty Whitie. At first we wanted to create a short horror film set in the woods and we started planning for the film. But towards the end of planning we had second thoughts and thought that it would be too difficult to film for the time we had. So we went back to our original idea we had since making the Harry Potter short film. That was to create a superhero film which also had a little bit of comedy in it. Our film was inspired by the marvel film Deadpool. We had planned for the character  to be like Deadpool by breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. However on set of the film we decided against the idea and we wanted to make our character unique and he has no dialogue in any of the films.

At the beginning we created a brainstorm just listing all of the possibilities we could do. We used most of the ideas we wrote down but some of them would have been taken out at a later date. We also looked up what we should use as an outfit however we wasn't sure if we would have used one. We created a survey to help us create our character by asking questions like "Do you think a superhero needs a supersuit" Most of the answers were yes and they had a lot of different reasons to why they thought that a superhero needs one. I also asked questions like "What qualities should a superhero have" A lot of people said that they think the hero should be fearless. We had found a location which we thought was perfect for what we wanted to do. It had a big open space for the fighting scene and a big area for all of the characters to run across. We went out to take pictures of the location for the location recce and we came back with about 10 pictures. We created a schedule that I tried to keep to. I think that I have pretty much stuck to it, but maybe I spent longer on the editing than I wanted to. I even came in during the half term to finish my editing because I wanted to make it as good as I could.

We went out to town to get some of the props that we needed. We got some fake blood from a makeup shop. Oskar had some of the other props that we needed. He had the costume and the mask and goggles, I brought in my hoodie that i'd use. We think that the film's age rating would be a 12 because there is a bit of violence and blood but it is not gory.

For casting we always agreed that I would play Tighty Whitie. For the victim we chose Syed because we thought he could create sympathy. For the bullies we chose Scottie and one of Oskars friends. We found a time where all of us would be able to make it and be able to film for a few hours. We had Oskar as the co director and he was operating one of the cameras. We booked out two cameras and a fig rig which was recently shown to us, we had two tripods too. We didn't use much of the microphone only when recording the sound of the game on the phone and there was one line of dialogue.

The day before shooting the film we went out with the fig rig to capture some test shots. This was the first time that we would have used the fig rig so we wanted to get used to it before taking it out the next day. We used to do a short shot inspired by the matrix where everyone is frozen and the camera moves around all of the characters. We also practiced the fighting scene we was going to use. We thought this looked really good and we agreed we would want to do it like this for the real film. We tested the fig rig on chase scenes by having Oskar and Scottie run and Syed filmed them. It looks good if we followed them from behind with the fig rig.

On the day of shooting it took us a while to get to the location with all of the equipment which delayed filming quite a bit. It took longer than we expected to get into outfits and set up all of the equipment We was about an hour behind schedule when we started filming. We started off with the chase scene where we needed Oskar to climb a tree with a fig rig to get a good shot of them from over head which is one of the opening shots of the film. We also had a shot that we liked was where we had the camera leaning on a brick so it was facing the sky and we had the actors run and jump over the camera which we thought would look pretty cool. We used to cameras to catch the same scene from two different angles. We wanted Tighty Whitie to be sitting up on the roof of the building. However once getting there we thought it'd be too difficult to get all of the equipment up onto the roof so we found another location which we thought would be a good replacement. The weather was really hot and I was in a big work suit. This didn't help when filming and I found it difficult to give my best performance. Another problem was that it was windy so when we was trying to capture the sound of the game on the phone it was picking up more wind than anything else. There was some shots that we had to re shoot a lot of for example the fighting scene had tri pods in the middle of the shot. I think the reason we didn't notice is because the fighting scene was the last scene we did and it was getting very hot and everyone was tired. We spent about 5 hours filming the whole film. We had planed to go out and re shoot some scenes but we didn't have enough time.

I spent most of the time editing because I wanted to make the film as good as I could make it. I was still adding things the same day that I had to send the film off. One issue I had was that because we used two cameras the shots where not in order making it hard to find all of the shots that was needed. I spent quite a long time getting the skeleton edit done. I spent a few hours looking through youtube for music. I found a good soundtrack from the assassins creed games. I thought about using this for the chase scene. I also used this music from the second short film I made on this course. I wanted to make a title before the film actually started so I went onto the website DaFont. I found a good font and I took it into photoshop to delete the background and then uploaded it as a PNG. I imported it into premiere and added it to the timeline. I used the zoom effect to make it zoom onto the screen. I used a lot of cross dissolves for moving from one scene to the other. I used a fade effect on the audio effects so the music sounds better. I had an issue with making the fight scene look good because of the tri pod. I had to cut a lot out but I used what I could. During the half term I was playing around in Premiere pro and looking at effects in youtube and I came across an effect that was green screened. I added this into my film and it looks really good. I found a font I liked for the credits and I had an idea about adding the bloopers with the credits. I added two bloopers and then I added the dancing scene from the advert we created during work experience week. I used a lot of effects like the ultra key for the green screen and a lot of dissolves for the video transitions and the audio transitions. I used the brightness and contrast effect to change the brightness of the video to make it look even better. I used this on some of the shots that I thought was too bright. I spent about a month or more editing this film. It is the longest I have ever spent editing a film for college.

The feedback I have got has been good. When people gave me feedback about how to improve I have tried to do it. A level 3 student said the editing is really good, and people from the class have said it is really good. I have shown the film to our tutors and they all really enjoy it. I am proud of what I have created. If I was going to do this again I would make sure that there is nothing in the way of the camera before filming. I would also try to learn more about premiere pro so that I could add even more to the film.

I had to create a power point to present the work. I think that it went ok but I feel like I should of explained more. However I think it was a step up from the last presentation I made. I did write a bit too much on the PowerPoint and some of the feedback I got was to write less on the PowerPoint and write on some cards or something like that. We made a trailer for both Tighty Whitie films that we shown before the presentations. I think that the trailer was really good and does a good job of hyping the film up.

peer feedback

level 3 student said that we should of had more written on cards than on the powerpoint and that our films were edited really well.

Abbie said that our films were all great
